Framing and Lumber Takeoff Worksheet

Turn a floor plan into a wall-by-wall stud, plate, and header count, then a priced cut list.

A framing package is easy to get wrong because the same wall contributes studs, plates, headers, and sheathing, each sold in a different unit. Working wall by wall down one sheet keeps those four counts tied to the wall that generated them, which makes the total checkable rather than a single number you have to trust.

How to fill it in

  1. Number every wall on your plan and use the same IDs here so the sheet can be audited against the drawing.
  2. Stud count per wall is (length in feet × 12 ÷ spacing) + 1, plus two for each opening's king studs.
  3. Plates are the wall length times the number of plates — three for a single bottom and double top.
  4. Transfer the cut list to the lumber calculator for board feet, then price against a supplier quote.
  5. Apply waste last, and remember it is decided by the lengths your yard stocks.
