At ProBuilderCalc, we believe the difference between a successful build and a costly mistake comes down to two things: understanding the work and getting the numbers right. Whether you are a homeowner tackling your first DIY patio or a professional contractor managing a residential development, our mission is to make construction planning easier through free calculators and expert-written guides.
The construction industry is famously unforgiving — a 5% error in a concrete order or a miscalculation in a staircase stringer can lead to thousands of dollars in waste and weeks of delays. We built ProBuilderCalc so you have both the tools to estimate accurately and the knowledge to understand why.
Who We Are: Built by Experts, for Builders
ProBuilderCalc was founded in 2026 by a team of software engineers and construction professionals who grew frustrated with online resources that offered either bare-bones calculators with no context, or long articles with no practical tools.
We realized that builders need both. A calculator alone gives you a number without explaining waste factors, material science, or regional standards. A guide alone leaves you searching for a way to run the math. That is why every calculator on our site includes a comprehensive expert-reviewed guide — and every guide links to the tools you need to put the knowledge into practice.
How we build and check a calculator
Every tool on this site goes through the same five steps. We are describing them here because "expert reviewed" means nothing on its own, and you should be able to judge the process rather than take the phrase on trust.
- Find what actually governs the number. Before any code is written we identify whether a recognised standard controls the result — a code section, a span table, a material specification. Stair geometry is set by the IRC; aggregate grading by ASTM; tile installation by the TCNA handbook.
- Implement the formula, not a rule of thumb. The calculator computes the real relationship rather than a simplification, and we show the formula on the page so you can check our arithmetic against your own.
- Test against worked examples. Each tool is run against examples calculated independently by hand, including the awkward cases — the total rise that fails the maximum riser height by a thirty-second of an inch, the tile order that lands just above a box boundary.
- Technical review by two people. Hassan checks the formulas, load assumptions, and code references. Zain checks the waste factors and site assumptions, and whether the output is a number you can actually order against.
- Publish with its sources attached. Where a standard governs the result, it is cited at the foot of the page with a link, so the claim is checkable rather than asserted.

One caveat that matters more than any of them: codes are adopted and amended locally. A figure that is correct under the model code can be wrong in your jurisdiction, so confirm anything structural with your building department before you build to it.
How our guides are written, including our use of AI
Our written guides are drafted with AI assistance and then technically reviewed by the people below before they are published. We would rather state that plainly than leave you to wonder about it.
What that means in practice is that a draft is a starting point and never the published article. Every formula, dimension, code reference, and worked example is checked against the primary standard it came from, and corrected when it does not survive that check. Some of what you will read here exists because a draft got something wrong: our staircase guide originally presented the carpenter's 7-11 rule as though it were code, when the IRC actually permits a 7¾ inch riser and a 10 inch tread, and the requirement that genuinely fails inspections is the 3/8 inch uniformity tolerance between risers in a flight.
Where no recognised body governs a figure — paint coverage rates, labour rates, regional material pricing — we say so rather than attaching a citation that does not support the claim. An unverifiable reference is worse than none, because it manufactures exactly the authority we are trying to earn honestly.

What our tools will not do
Being straight about the limits is more useful than claiming precision we cannot deliver. Four things these calculators are not:
- Not a substitute for engineered drawings. Load paths, beam sizing, and anything carrying structure need a licensed engineer. Our tools estimate quantities; they do not design structures.
- They do not know your local amendments. We work from the model code. Your jurisdiction may have adopted an older edition or amended it, and only your building department can tell you which.
- We do not survey prices. The cost estimators do arithmetic on figures you supply. We deliberately avoid presenting regional pricing as though we had collected it, because we have not.
- Waste factors are planning defaults. They reflect common practice, not a guarantee. Your real overage is usually decided by the box, bundle, or truck size you are buying in, which is why our guides work that step through explicitly.
Corrections
If a calculator gives you a result you believe is wrong, we want to hear about it, and a specific report is far more useful than a general one. Tell us the tool, the inputs you entered, the result you got, and the result you expected.
We check reports against the governing standard rather than against our own previous answer. If the tool is wrong we fix it and update the guide that explains it; if the tool is right we will show you the reference it is built on. Either way you will get an answer, and the review dates on our pages reflect when the content was last checked rather than when it was last touched.
