Aggregate and Sub-Base Worksheet

Compacted volume to loose volume to tons, with a lift plan for the compaction itself.

Aggregate is measured as compacted depth but delivered loose and billed by weight, so there are two conversions between your tape measure and the invoice. This sheet does them in order and adds a lift plan, because ordering the right tonnage and then placing it in one thick layer still gives you a base that settles.

How to fill it in

  1. Work in compacted depth first — that is the thickness the finished base must be.
  2. Compacted volume in cubic feet = length × width × (depth ÷ 12); divide by 27 for cubic yards.
  3. Add the compaction allowance, typically 20 to 25% for crushed stone, to get loose volume.
  4. Convert to tons using your supplier's own figure, not a generic one.
  5. Plan the lifts before delivery: 3 to 4 inches per lift, compacted before the next goes down.
